Ceramic laminate tiles are very large-sized but thanks to the advantage provided by being thinner, it is relatively easy to cut, drill and finish the edges without having to use large or expensive equipment or machinery.
However, in specific projects with different format needs, it is recommended to order units pre-cut at the factory.
In the rest of cases, cutting, drilling and edge finishing operations can be carried out on-site with appropriate equipment.
Cutting operations can be carried out with tools used for cutting glass (small manual glass cutters to industrial cutting equipment).
The advantages of this type of cutting are extreme cleanliness, high precision and high speed.
It is recommended to previously carry out some cutting tests so you apply the correct pressure to the laminate tile.
There are cutting tools specifically developed for these kinds of laminate tiles that apply dry cutting technology for ceramic tiles to laminate tiles’ dimensions.
These tools can be used to make straight dry cuts and diagonal cuts of all types. In order to cut them, place the ceramic laminate tile on the work table, mark the cutting line, position the guide and fix it in position. Then mark it with a scoring wheel. To do that, mark the start point and roll the wheel along with constant pressure and speed.
After removing the guide, separate the laminate tile with pliers. Apply pressure with the pliers on both ends until you hear the breaking sound.
Finally, perform complete separation on the edge of the table or by placing a block beneath the laminate tile and exert the necessary pressure to separate the resulting pieces.
It is also possible to carry out dry or water-cooled cutting with a disc using hand tools or cutting benches.
In this case, you must with a high spinning speed and low speed of advance in order to achieve a good result. This system only allows straight cuts and has the advantage of being able to be performed on site.
To cut more complex shapes it is necessary to use waterjet cutting.
To make drill holes and round holes you must use a drill that is not in hammer mode since ceramic laminate tile is drilled by cutting not hammering.
It is recommended to water cool the cutting start point and start drilling at a low turning speed; do not exert excessive pressure.
You can cut holes with a diameter of less than 6 mm using hole saws, which are used for glass machining, fitted on a (hand or bench) drill or with a waterjet.
In the case of hole saws, it is recommended to use a diamond size similar to that used for stoneware tile.
Milling and edge finishing can be carried out in different ways with different levels of precision. Machines designed for finishing glass panes can be used with the same results in terms of smoothing and finish for ceramic laminate tiles.
Good results can be achieved with machines and tools for machining natural stone, albeit with a lower quality finish.
